Our Fleet

Whilst some club members do choose to own their own gliders, technically there is no need to buy a glider or any other equipment in order to enjoy gliding with the club.

Club gliders are available for use by club members for learning and solo flying. Our current fleet consists of the following aircraft:

ASK 21 (G-CKOT) Image

ASK 21 (G-CKOT)

This modern high-performance glider is made by the world renowned Schleicher company in Germany. It is a two-seat training glider in a tandem configuration which means one seat is behind the other. The student pilot sits in the front with the instructor sitting behind. Both pilots have identical cockpits and the glider can be flown from either one. This glider is also fitted with hand controls to provide equality of access for those with a disability of the lower limbs. A hoist of medical standard is available to assist with entry and exit.

The ASK21 has a wingspan of 17 metres (55ft 9in), a top speed of 151 knots (175 mph) and a maximum g-loading of +6.5 and -4. It has a glide ratio of 34:1 meaning for every 34 metres it travels it loses only 1 metre in height! This is the main glider in which students will complete most of their training and in which they will fly solo following successful completion of training.

This magnificent glider is manufactured by the Glaser Dirks company of Germany.  It is a two-seat dual-control glider used for advanced training and solo flying. It also features tandem seating. The wingspan is 20metres (65.6 feet). Maximum speed 146 knots (168 mph). Glide ratio 44:1.

Our Schleicher ASK 13 provides additional instructing capacity and a vintage element to our operation. Introduced in 1966 these were very popular tandem trainers in their day with approximately 700 examples produced. This example was constructed in 1969. With a wingspan of 16 metres and glide ratio of 27:1 the ASK 13 is a very docile and forgiving aircraft to fly. This example was beautifully restored by club member Owen Anderson in 2023.

‘ROMEO 7’, our second ASK 13 was constructed in 1979 making it one of the last ASK 13s produced before the introduction of its glassfibre replacement, the ASK 21. The fuselage is a welded steel tube structure with spruce stringers and fabric-covered overall, except for the nose. The large single blown canopy provides an excellent all-round view for both pilots.

The Astir is a single-seat glass fibre glider built by the Grob Aircraft company.  It is for use by club members who have reached solo standard.  It has a 15 metre wingspan and a glide ratio of 34:1.

Super Cub PA18 (G-TUGG) Image

Super Cub PA18 (G-TUGG)

The workhorse of the fleet is the Centre’s tow plane – a Piper Aircraft Super Cub.  It is fitted with a 180hp engine and large propeller optimised for towing. The combination of a light airframe, powerful engine and high lift wing together with its strong undercarriage make the Super Cub an ideal tug aircraft.

EuroFOX 915iS (G-TUGC) Image

EuroFOX 915iS (G-TUGC)

Our brand new EuroFOX replaces our trusty Super Cub for the 2024 season. Fitted with a 141hp Rotax fuel injected and turbo charged engine, the EuroFOX will equal the performance of the Super Cub at a significantly lower operating cost and much reduced environmental impact.
